Class Description List

Our class list is now complete! Some clean-up and organization of the list may take place, so classes may not appear in the same order if you check back often. Scheduling is now complete and may be viewed in PDF form.

We have three types of classes this year: Hands-on, Techniques Track, and Demonstrations.

Hands-On classes are project oriented. You will get a chance to try out the arts being taught. In most cases, you'll also take home a completed project. For example, knife-making. These projects are usually longer and tend to monopolize a lot of your event time.

Techniques Track classes are either an overview of an area, or are isolated techniques which do not lend themselves to a completed project. For example, the lecture on soapstone molds, or the class on wire-drawing. We hope to keep a full weekend of shorter classes going in the Techniques Track.

Demonstrations are a chance to look and learn, but are not actual classes. For example, Master Goodwine will demonstrate a wind furnace from Theophilus.

If you have a class you would like to teach, you are too late to be listed in the site booklet. However, you can still teach, and we will post notices of your class.

Cancellations: The period enameling demo is cancelled. (The Cloisonée and Champlevé classes will take place.)
The Damascening (overlay) portion of Francis' Metal-in-Metal Inlay class is cancelled.

Carving Soapstone Molds for Pewter Casting (Techniques Track)
Conde Fernando Rodriguez de Falcon
This is a lecture class focusing on the information needed to help you get started in carving soapstone molds for casting basic pewter objects: Items like award medallions, pilgrimage badges, event tokens, or belt buckles - essentially any basically "flat" object.

You'll have an opportunity to see and handle a variety of finished molds and castings and other resources. We'll cover materials and tools as well as layout, material preparation, and carving techniques, and you'll probably laugh and/or grimace when you hear about the mistakes I have made - or the "Don't ask me how I know this" parts of the class.

Class Length: 1 hour

Understanding Multi-Part Molds for Pewter Casting (Techniques Track)
Conde Fernando Rodriguez de Falcon
This is a lecture class focusing on information to help you advance from simple molds for casting flat objects up to multi part molds designed for casting more complicated three dimensional objects, such as pins, buttons, belt mounts, buckles and strap ends.

You'll have an opportunity to see and handle a variety of finished molds and castings and other resources.

This is a second tier class which will not cover the basic stone preparation or carving techniques from my Carving Soapstone Molds for Pewter Casting classes.

Class Length: 1 hour

Carving Soapstone Molds for Pewter Casting — Open Workshop (Hands-On)
Conde Fernando Rodriguez de Falcon
This workshop is your chance to put the information from my lecture classes to practical use before you forget. I'll have soapstone blocks available for $5, and a variety of tools, casting equipment, and pewter on hand so you can try your hand. With some time and effort you can complete a basic mold of your own and then try casting it to take a few finished pieces home.

This is an open workshop. You don't have to be here for the entire time. If there are other classes you want to take, feel free to step out and come back as time allows.

While attendance at one of my Carving Soapstone Molds for Pewter Casting lectures (or equivalent experience) is not necessarily required, it is suggested - it will likely safe you from some easily avoidable mistakes and the too often linked frustration.
Class Fee: Soapstone blocks available for $5 each
Age Limit: Under 12 only with guardian, under 16 needs guardian during casting
Class Length: Balance of Saturday after lecture

Please note that this process involves working with lead. Safety precautions will be discussed and emphasized.

Class Length: 1 hour

Niello Workshop (Hands-On)
Lord Gunnarr Alfljotr
This class is a hands-on workshop in which, under Gunnarr's direction, the students will alloy a batch of niello, apply it to a pre-etched piece of base metal, and finish it in accordance with the techniques covered in the Niello Demonstration, above. This will result in a finished piece that can be worn as a pin or converted into a pendant. It is required that students attend the demonstration before the workshop. Please not that this process involves working with lead. Safety precautions will be discussed and emphasized. Any person working in an unsafe manner will be asked to leave the workshop.
As this workshop deals with both fire and chemicals including lead and sulfur, no loose clothing, no food or drink, no open-toed shoes, long hair must be tied back. It is advised that students bring a small hand towel or rag and a flat or half round needle file (No. 2 works well) that will be used on the niello. Safety glasses are recommended. This class will be taught at the forge of Francis Bean.

Students will be expected to learn and follow basic forge safety rules.
Class Limits: 2 students at a time as space is available.

Brynjolf will offer beginning to intermediate blacksmithing instruction, unscheduled, upon request. You name the project, and Brynjolf will help you to do it. Brynjolf will be teaching at the forge of Francis Bean, when the forge is not otherwise occupied.

Materials on hand are varied, consisting of assorted tool steel bars and rods, and a larger quantity of smaller (quarter inch) mild steel. Tool steel is unnecessary and expensive to use for most projects. If you wish to work on something larger or specific, bringing your own metal stock would be wise.

Students will be expected to learn and follow basic forge safety rules. Please wear appropriate footwear and clothing. Synthetic materials are inappropriate, not only do they burn but, they stick to you while doing so!

Gerald Goodwine, OL
Mundanely I have associates in Mechanical, Engineering, and Robotics Technology. I have worked as a (real) machinist and currently work for the BNSF railroad as what is called a machinist but work more as a mechanic on 4000 Hp locomotives. I first learned about the SCA when I was coming home from a martial arts class and spied the local group wailing on each other in carpet armor and freon can helmets. Oh yeah! That was a long long time ago. When told that they were a history group, they almost lost me. I could not have cared less about who won what war when—especially in Europe. The fighters were just enough to suck me in. Until I started making stuff like armor. Then someone discovered my other hobby was making wine. I got preoccupied. So now My laurel medallion (for wine making) is nearing its 21st birthday.

HL Guillaume de la Sudterre
I have been in the SCA for over 15 years, doing mostly bright-metal work. About 10 years ago I discovered the little-known (then) art of Viking bronze casting and have been experimenting with it ever since. My emphasis is on completely period techniques, and strive for every piece I make (including the mould and crucible) to look exactly as it would have in period -- flaws and all. Since there are only a handful of people that I know of doing casting of this sort, I hope to further interest in it with my classes. I teach every year at Lilies War, and at a handful of smaller events throughout the year. I also enjoy woodworking and blacksmithing.

Teaching: Bronze Casting Workshop, Foundry Demo (crucible pour and cupola run).
